Our mission

This new Chair aims to document wealth inequalities in Canada, particularly in Quebec, according to class, gender, race, ethnicity, and citizenship.

Personal wealth refers to the financial and non-financial assets held by individuals, net of their debts. It is an increasingly important resource in today’s societies. However, wealth inequalities remain underexplored and poorly understood, with research primarily focusing on career trajectories and wage disparities between individuals.

Acknowledging the familial dimension of assets and debts, the Chair will explore the role of intergenerational transfers in shaping wealth inequalities and will delve into issues of taxation and policies surrounding these transfers. It will also examine the impact of subjective attitudes toward wealth accumulation and the constraints faced in asset and credit markets.
